Tell us a little about yourselves!

It was love at first texting. Before we met—at the height of the pandemic—we had been heavily writing each other for nights. That said, our first encounter was at the train station, only for five minutes, while changing trains and with a mask on. Needless to say, the connection was so strong, we both were left puzzled after only seeing our eyes, hearing our voices and feeling our hugs. Ever since, it is also our arts that bring us together. Being a singer and an architect from Austria, we live and practice our art internationally, while being based in Zurich, Switzerland.

Why did you decide to get married where you did?

Since we both come from the same countryside in Austria, we wanted to celebrate our love where we grew up. As we travel a lot, feeling connected to our home is very dear to us. We also saw the chance to show our friends the beauty of our origins. For the wedding, the specific locations had to have an emotional significance for us and be artistically enriching. We ended up celebrating between the lake and the mountains, in a neo-Romanesque church, a little-used boathouse, and a helicopter hangar.

How many guests did you have?

This was the hardest part. We would have wished to share the celebration of our love with as much people as we can. But of course, practical reasons prevented us from doing so. In the end, we had a little over 100 guests.

What was your budget?

This depends on which one of us you ask! As being professionally involved in the arts, we wanted to curate as much as possible by ourselves. We enjoyed planning and creating every task related to music, graphics and spatial design. This did not prevent us, though, from big expenses – more than initially planned, as we are both perfectionists who like to get the best out of everything. This said, we also had been lucky to have been supported and actively helped by our generous and talented families and friends – from organizing drinks, preparing the boathouse, setting-up the hangar to cleaning all the places afterwards.

Tell us about your outfits.

We had both civil wedding and church wedding on one weekend. We chose more whimsical clothes and swimsuits for the first day, and more elegant but versatile wedding attire for the latter day. Large pussybows, open loafers, double-breasted jackets, puff sleeves, a corset and a short balloon skirt waiting under the long, festive, self-designed and tailor-made wedding dress had been our own personal fashion statements. Overall, we aimed for bold clothing that was full of character and had a touch of casualness—just like grandmother's advice: choose your clothes carefully, but wear them as if you had forgotten them.

What was the most important aspect for you, in terms of planning your wedding?

As professional creatives, it was important for us to be artistically engaged in everything that we produced and to remain natural and authentic: from the invitations to the carefully curated musical dramaturgy, from the spatial experiences to the choice of meals. Always in close contact with the photographers and vendors, we shared and developed our ambitions. Luckily, we were all pulling in the same direction. The main goal was to give our guests and ourselves two days full of connection and closeness, sensory experiences for eyes, ears, mouth and heart and, above all, love. We wanted it to be warm, exciting, heartfelt, inspiring, cozy, exuberant, free, and romantic.

Were there any elements that were important for you to incorporate?

All the elements and events that contributed to the experience of these days were important – the civil wedding in the capital, love songs performed by the family band, the walk through the city as a newlywed couple, the boat-trip on a deserted lake, the intimate get-together with our closest family and friends at the boathouse, the live-made pizza, the short swim in the ice-cold lake, the portrait sketching session of our friends in candlelight, the curated sweets, the getting-ready in a beautiful, newly opened hotel, the ceremony in the neo-Romanesque church, the warm sounds of the superb cello trio, the car-drive from the lake to the mountains with a pit-stop at grandma’s place, the arrival at the helicopter hangar, the welcoming birds chirping sound installation, the inflatable mirror sphere, the meandering table, the shiny tablecloth, the hanging moss balls, the delicious food, the stunning voice of Keza, the eye-catching wedding-cake, and the projected sunset. It was important for us to use the selected elements, colours, sounds and materials to create an interplay between the artistic, the heavenly and the earthly.

Any tips for couples getting married?

Just do it. And do it your way! Do not attempt to fulfil the expectations of others, because it’s your day. Always communicate and stay true to yourselves. Be authentic, enjoy the moment where everything comes together and make sure to carve out some time for the two of you. During the preparations and also on your wedding day!
