Tell us a little about yourselves!

I grew up in Shanghai and Joel grew up in Sydney, and somehow — through countless little decisions that led us to the same place at the same time — we found each other and have spent the past eight years building a rewarding, comfortable life together in Sydney. What started as a simple connection slowly grew into the foundation of our lives today because we share similar values and support each other through every season. Our strengths balance each other perfectly — I bring the creativity and eye for design, while Joel grounds everything with his steady, rational nature. Outside of work, we love playing basketball, travelling together, spending time with our families, and enjoying quiet evenings at home with our cat.

Why did you decide to get married where you did?

I studied architecture, so the Art Gallery has always held a special place in my heart. I spent countless hours here during uni, coming back often for assignments, inspiration, and a bit of quiet. The arches in the Main Hall have always been one of my favourite details, and I’d dreamed for years about creating something meaningful in that space — so hosting our wedding there felt incredibly natural and personal.

How many guests did you have?

We celebrated with 80 guests — family from both sides and the people who have each played a meaningful role in our lives at different moments. Emotions & Math captured our day.

What was your budget?

Our budget was $80,000.

Tell us about your outfits.

For the traditional tea ceremony, Joel wore a traditional Chinese jacket, while I honoured my heritage by wearing the same qipao my mother wore at her wedding 30 years ago. Before the main ceremony, I also wore a pre-ceremony dress by Chinese designer brand Ah Bon — I loved the textured heavy linen, which gave the dress such a beautiful, structural volume. For the ceremony itself, Joel chose a Pal Zileri wool tuxedo with peak lapels and a wing-collar tuxedo shirt, paired with a Jaeger LeCoultre Rendez-Vous Classic Night & Day watch. I wore the Vivienne Westwood Galaxy Cape for the main ceremony, then changed into a Marc Le Bihan dress for our first dance and the afterparty.

What was the most important aspect for you, in terms of planning your wedding?

The most important aspect for me was creating a wedding that felt truly personal and intentional. I wanted every element — from the venue to the styling — to reflect who we are as a couple. With my architecture background, the space and the way our guests experienced it mattered a lot to me. We wanted the day to feel warm, thoughtful, and beautifully designed, but also incredibly comfortable and welcoming. More than anything, we hoped our guests would feel connected, relaxed, and genuinely cared for throughout the entire celebration.

Were there any elements that were important for you to incorporate?

Absolutely. We wanted to honour our heritage through the tea ceremony and my mother’s qipao, while also creating moments that felt fun and engaging for our guests — like the LEGO sign-in and the live painter. Every element was chosen because it added warmth, personality, or a sense of connection.

Any tips for couples getting married?

I think it’s really important to plan the day for you and your partner. A question that helped us a lot was, “How do we want to feel on the day?” Once you’re clear on that, every decision becomes so much easier — you end up planning with intention instead of pressure. Focus on creating an atmosphere that reflects the experience you want to have together, and everything else will naturally fall into place.

Are there any vendors that you would like to tell us a little more about?

We wanted to give a special shoutout to all our vendors — every single one of them was so easy to work with, which made the entire process feel seamless and stress-free. We chose each vendor because we genuinely loved their aesthetics and trusted their creative vision. It was such a joy to see how naturally their styles came together on the day to create something that felt so true to us.
