Melbourne-based trio Isla, Eric and Roy from Emotions And Math, live and breathe wedding photography and videography. Through over 500 weddings across Melbourne and destinations like Italy, Switzerland, and the US, as well as their graphic design background, they have developed a unique perspective that they bring to every celebration. With an ethereal, soft, and muted style, Emotions And Math blend documentary storytelling with an eye for details that often go unnoticed.

Tell us about your business!

We’re Isla, Eric and Roy, a Melbourne-based trio shooting weddings on digital and Super 8. We kicked things off on April Fool’s Day back in 2016 (no pranks, promise) and we’ve been all in ever since.

More than 500 weddings later, we’re still completely smitten with what we do. It honestly means the world to us that so many couples have trusted us to tell their stories and we don’t take that lightly.

Where are you based?

We’re based in Melbourne, Australia, but we’ve been fortunate to follow our couples to amazing destinations around the world.

This year, we’ll be documenting weddings in New Zealand, Europe, Hong Kong, Bali, the US, and Mexico.

Do you travel for weddings?

Absolutely! While Australia is home, traveling for weddings sparks our creativity. Each experience broadens our perspective and keeps our creativity feeling fresh and inspired.

How would you describe your style?

We’d describe our style as playful, with a design-minded approach. Coming from a graphic design background, we’ve always loved the details and enjoy weaving them into every shoot. We really value getting to know our couples—what they wear, the venues they choose, the vendors they work with—because each choice tells a story. Understanding these details helps us create images that truly reflect who they are.

A lot of couples ask where we’ll take photos, and our answer is usually: “What’s your vibe? What are you wearing? Where do you hang out together?” From there, we find locations that feel intentional and tell their story, rather than just picking somewhere that looks nice. For us, every decision needs to serve a purpose.

What is your most memorable career moment?

I’d say one of my most unforgettable moments was being chosen by a fellow wedding photographer from another country. It was such an incredible honor.

What inspires you?

There are way too many to list, but I’d say design and architecture inspire me the most.

How would you describe your working style?

We usually keep things quiet during a shoot. Instead of creating a high-energy environment, we’ve found our best work happens when we step back and really focus on what’s unfolding in front of us.

Do you shoot digitally, on film or both?

Both digital and film, oh, and super 8 too.

Do you have custom packages according to individual needs?

Yes. We believe every wedding is unique, and your package should reflect that.

What is a favourite product or service that you offer and why?

Film and super 8.

Where would you love to travel to for work?

Kyoto and Barcelona. We’re huge fans of architecture.

Who is your dream client?

We love working with design-minded couples.

What is your advice to couples getting married?

Trust the process, enjoy the ride, and definitely check out The Anti-Bride!
