Tell us about your business!
G'day, my name is Baker and I created TWILL to put an umbrella over my wedding and family work. I spent about a decade behind the DJ decks at weddings and wanted to jump out into the action and explore my passion for photography.
The name comes from combining my first & middle names (Timothy & William). I also liked it because it's the name of a tightly woven, durable fabric. I'll let you make of that what you will.
What would you like couples to know about you?
I approach every occasion, couple and family with fresh eyes. With a focus on letting each family tell their own story. This means you'll end up with authentic photos that are uniquely yours, devoid of trends.
Personally, I hate being in front of the camera, so I’ve got some pretty good tricks up my sleeve to help you feel at ease if you're the same.
Where are you based?
I’m based in the beautiful coastal town of Austinmer on the Leisure Coast of NSW, Australia. Though I frequently travel interstate and abroad.
How would you describe your style?
My style is influenced by the greats of documentary and street photography. You can expect a lot of energy, and some ambitious compositions. I love to fill the frame with as much action as possible as I believe this helps trigger the feeling of being right there at the wedding again.
On the flip side, my style is also heavily influenced by the photography of Linda McCartney. She had an innate ability to capture people with a unique empathy. Humanising towering figures of Rock n Roll and the arts. I guess I’m doing my best to emulate her as well.
How would you describe your working style?
Obsessive. I’m a die-hard photography nerd. Forever haunted by the photos that got away. As a result I carry a camera on me wherever I go. This can sometimes lead to interrupted conversations and unexpected detours, much to the dismay of friends and family.
It does however work out great for the couple’s whose weddings I’m photographing as I’m always on the look out for the moments that most leave unnoticed.
Do you shoot digitally, on film or both?
Both though I prefer shooting 100% on film. I only bought my first digital camera about 2 years ago haha! I also print in the darkroom and shoot video on Super8 and 16mm.
What is a favourite product or service that you offer and why?
I love printing wedding photos in the darkroom. For me it's the final step in the process of shooting on film. I also love the idea of a photo I took and printed sitting on a mantelpiece somewhere that will be around long after I’m gone.
Who is your dream client?
I’d say it's the couples whose personality shines through in their wedding planning. The ones who are making decisions for themselves and not out of obligation. This usually leads to the funnest wedding experiences for all involved. Weddings are a celebration of you and your love, so I think it's important to let yourselves shine through!
What is your advice to couples getting married?
Carve out at least 20 minutes on your wedding day to yourselves and defend it ruthlessly. Often you’re being carted off, this way and that, never really getting to stop and bask in the moment for yourselves. Duck away and have a smooch. You’ll thank me later
Also, If you wouldn’t shout them lunch, don’t invite them to your wedding!
