Molly Adams is a documentary photographer based in New York and New England. She collaborates closely with her couples to authentically capture emotions and love, using a blend of aesthetic documentary and editorial styles. Molly Adams captures a limited number of weddings outside of New York and New England each year.

Tell us about your business!

I am a music and documentary photographer who got into weddings by way of my artists. I fell in love with the ability to capture important images while having so much fun. A photo of grandma on the dance floor means so much more to me than any artist shot in a magazine.

What would you like couples to know about you?

I work collaboratively with your vision and I alone can’t make magic. I will capture your emotion, your love, and your aesthetic in the best light, but I can’t make things appear that aren’t there. I want to capture you and yours – not recreate a Pinterest board.

Where are you based?

New York and New England.

Do you travel for weddings?

I take on a limited number of weddings outside of New York and New England each year.

How would you describe your style?

Timeless Technicolor? I approach each day with a mix of (aesthetic) documentary and editorial. By aesthetic documentary I mean that I position a scene in the best light, and remind everyone to stand up straight. Then I let it unfold. By editorial, I mean let’s serve some magazine looks.

I care most about my color control. My greens and skies in particular.

What is your most memorable career moment?

Snoop Dogg’s bodyguard told me I’m cool.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by old copies of Life magazine, current copies of Aperture, and any documentary photographer capturing life without a huge production.

How would you describe your working style?

I am a reactive photographer – I watch and see how a situation will organically flow before interjecting and posing. I try to do an engagement session with every couple before the day so that I know their organic intimacy language. This allows me to direct within a natural means for them.

Do you shoot digitally, on film or both?

I shoot both, though I also offer full film packages.

Do you have custom packages according to individual needs?

My base packages are very simple and based on material (film) and crew time so there is typically only one that speaks to each wedding needs. From there, couple’s can customize to more film, camcorders, film cameras for guests, and more.

What is a favourite product or service that you offer and why?

Right now, I am loving the camcorders for the guests. They really take it and run with it and capture the day in a way that I can’t.

Photography wise, I always love the “more film” add-on, as long as the couple understands the realities and limitations of film.

Who is your dream client?

My dream client is one who is not only looking to enjoy the day with their friends and family, but is also wanting to curate an experience for their guests.

What is your advice to couples getting married?

Do whatever you want. If it’s authentic to you now, it will age well. Or it will be funny. Do not try to chase someone else’s aesthetic, make your own choices and the day will be perfect.
