Tell us about your business!

I'm Ben Barron, a hybrid film and digital wedding photographer based in Hull, Yorkshire, shooting weddings across the UK and abroad.

I'm there to capture the day as it actually happened, not to stage it. Film is part of every wedding I shoot - it's not an aesthetic filter, it's part of how I work – and I balance that with digital so nothing on the day gets missed.

What would you like couples to know about you?

I live up north with my wife, daughter and our whippet, Morris, and outside of weddings I'm still just as drawn to photography – to interesting places and the people in them. At weddings, what I'm really after is human connection: the energy in the room, the joy, the unguarded moments. I see each wedding as its own piece of music, with its own players, rhythm and cadence, and the galleries I put together reflect that.

Where are you based?

I’m based in Yorkshire, UK but shoot weddings all over the UK and further afield.

Do you travel for weddings?

Yes - all the time.

No week is the same I can be in London week and then Italy the next.I like travel. The people you meet along the way, the vibrancy of the unknown and the adventure along the way brings it all together; it makes it exciting. All the elements that make a good wedding in a way.

How would you describe your style?

I document weddings as they are: emotional, unposed and human. I use a mixed approach of analogue and digital to add texture, colour, mood and atmosphere to amplify the ebbs and flows of the celebration.

Each wedding is unique. Each wedding has its own personality.

I craft images that reflect yourselves and your loved ones.

What inspires you?

The small, shared things that happen day to day – family, friends, the outdoors, travel, a day by the coast, a decent coffee and a good meal. Photography isn't something I switch off from outside of weddings either; I'm drawn to interesting and unusual places and to capturing people in them, and finding the art in the ordinary is as much a part of my life as the work itself.

How would you describe your working style?

Observational first. I prioritise capturing what's really going on – full of life and energy – and let the day lead rather than working from a rigid shot list. Portrait sessions are relaxed and involve movement and subtle direction; I'm led by the light and the environment on the day rather than forcing a pose.

Do you shoot digitally, on film or both?

I shoot in a hybrid manner. I capture around 30% of the day on film using a mixture of different stocks for various parts of the day. The planning collaboration with the couple is super important to how I work; I can best determine which film to shoot at which given portions of the day.

Do you have custom packages according to individual needs?

I work entirely on a client-by-client basis. Every wedding is unique - different personalities, locations, light, you name it - so I don't work from a fixed package structure. I sit down with each couple to understand their priorities and talk through how I fit in with their plans, and that's what shapes the day.

What is a favourite product or service that you offer and why?

In-house printing.

I am a big believer that images should be printed and exist in the physical space and not just as ones and zeros in the cloud. Hung up on walls, sloted into albums and on your coffee table for people to look at and enjoy.
