Tell us a little about yourselves!

Natalie, 28 at the time of the wedding, is originally from Melbourne and came over to Perth to study around five years ago. A big believer in throwing parties, celebrating the small things and – of course – the big things.

Aish, 29, was born in India but grew up in Perth. Getting married was always important to him, and having memories to commemorate the life built together in Perth was a priority.

The two of us are exceptionally extroverted and loud. We were naturally drawn to each other because of how similar we are and have been completely codependent ever since we met in 2022!

Why did you decide to get married where you did?

We had decided on a big multi-day wedding in India with a couple of hundred guests already. Because our official wedding was to be overseas, we needed to do all of the paperwork at some stage and decided to time it in with our shoot with Kath Young.

In terms of what we wanted for our ceremony in Perth, we have always been quite anti-traditional. We found that we didn’t relate to the more classic ideas and themes that we saw online and thought they lacked fun (which didn’t seem very us!). We were inspired by the filmmaker Wong Kar-Wai, and the iconic wedding photoshoots that took place in Hong Kong in the 80s. We loved the idea of being captured on film doing activities around where we lived, instead of the usual posed, formal wedding shots.

We knew Kath was going to be the one to nail it because of her expertise and creative style, and when we sent her our inspo she found some spots around Northbridge that fit what we were looking for. She did all the hard work!

How many guests did you have?

For our Aussie ceremony we had around five people (a lot of our closest friends and family were already in India!) and for our Indian wedding we had about 200.

What was your budget?

The entire budget for our Aussie ceremony was essentially just the cost of the photoshoot. We put all our savings towards our Indian wedding!

Tell us about your outfits.

Again, leaning away from traditional bridal and groom looks was important to us. Aish was inspired by Bode tailoring but we didn’t have the Bode budget. When Venroy dropped a double breasted, oversized cream coloured suit, he grabbed it straight away. The bolo tie was obviously just the perfect vintage touch!

Nat knew what dress she wanted already and found the Natalie Rolt mini dress in her size on Depop a few months out from the shoot. The veil was found on Etsy, and all of the other accessories she already owned.

What was the most important aspect for you, in terms of planning your wedding?

That it felt like us. We really could not relate to the look and feel of a formal wedding!

Were there any elements that were important for you to incorporate?

We were pretty attached to it being captured on film and ended up with a combination of film and digital shots.

Any tips for couples getting married?

We highly recommend an engagement period long enough to not feel rushed - ours was around 18 months. Other than that, delegate tasks to your nearest and dearest a few days-weeks out and make sure they are across everything that is happening. Both of us were so tired after our Indian wedding from answering all the questions and just completely emotionally burnt out. Worth it though!

Are there any vendors that you would like to tell us a little more about?

Obviously Kath Young! She completely got our vision and made it better than what we could have ever anticipated. We are quite time-blind and on the day were running late for the photoshoot. She made us feel a lot less flustered and even helped us finish ironing our outfits – what a gem.
