Tell us a little about yourselves!

We (Ane and Diego) are both from San Sebastian and we are both painters. We met for the first time by sharing a studio space 5 years ago, which is quite strange because we live in a small city and we have lots of friends in common. It took a while for us to start dating, but once the spark started, we never looked back.

We are lovers of painting, nature, music, and the hustle and bustle.

Why did you decide to get married where you did?

Laura, Ane’s sister, is the wedding planner behind Octubre Studio. She found out that a friend was looking to buy a XVII-century Basque palace in the hills of Aia called Palacio Laurgain that had potential for wedding hosting. This is the first wedding ever that has taken place in that space that we know of, and everything was kind of improvised. Right now they are starting the renovations to host more weddings in the future (calling all wedding planners!)

How many guests did you have?

90 total, between friends and family.

What was your budget?

We managed to keep it under 20,000, but only because we were incredibly lucky to be surrounded by a very talented group of planners, photographers, DJs, and designers who were very generous with us. It also helped that we handled the setup the day before and the cleanup the day after ourselves, with the help of family members.

Tell us about your outfits.

Ane: I found a vintage Italian custom-made wedding dress from the 50s. It was made of silk and organza. We had to do some adjustments with a local seamstress and it turned out great. The tennis racket hair clips by Shrimps and the bag by Iona Lake caught the attention of the guests.

For the party look: dress is by Gimaguas, ballerinas by Massimo Dutti and the earrings made of blown glass by Justine Menard.

Diego: The suit was by Gentl Supply. I was having a hard time finding the right suit for me and Cayetano, the owner, was a tremendous help and hooked me up with a great suit a month before the wedding. Shoes by Jacques Solovière, silk shirt by Hai and a custom-made handkerchief by our designer friend Sophia Menasse (Goop).

What was the most important aspect for you, in terms of planning your wedding?

We wanted to keep it simple and natural above all and we got rid of everything that felt superfluous. The natural beauty of the space was doing the heavy lifting for us, so we just focused on having a beautiful square table that surrounded the roses in the middle of the garden.

Fun fact: two days before the wedding, we saw that the forecast was not looking too great, so we changed all the timings and decided to have a daytime wedding instead of an evening wedding. We were lucky and the sudden change worked for all the guests and vendors, and it’s the best decision we could have made, because it did rain in the evening. Luckily by then we were all dancing on the makeshift dancefloor inside the old animal barn.

Were there any elements that were important for you to incorporate?

Right from the beginning of the planning, we knew that we had to have a donkey to carry Ane from the church to the venue. We even included the donkey in a painting we did for the invitation. It was a 3-minute walk from the church with all the guests following us, but we didn’t rehearse it, so we were a bit nervous. But Txulita, the mighty donkey from a family friend, was extremely gentle and sweet and did a great job.

Also, we have been painting together some extra-large format canvases as decorations for other weddings, and we wanted to include a new piece for our own party, that was hiding the entrance to the dancefloor.

Any tips for couples getting married?

Everybody says the same but it’s true. The day goes by extremely fast, so make sure you enjoy every moment.

Also, keep it simple if you can, and maybe don’t leave everything for the last minute like we may or may not have done.

Are there any vendors that you would like to tell us a little more about?

Of course Octubre Studio was essential to us with all the art direction and the production. Also, Cecilia, the photographer from Dias De Vino y Rosas, is a good friend and knocked it out of the park for us with an all-analogue set.
