Tell us a little about yourselves!
We are Maike & Hugo. With roots in Germany, France, and the Netherlands, we live in Amsterdam and absolutely love getting lost in a theme. We’ve been together for 6 years and last year on our 5th anniversary Hugo proposed in the mountains in France, so the mountain theme had already started.
We believe we are "life-enjoyers" who try to approach life with humour and love, and felt very lucky to be able to celebrate that with all our friends and family.
Why did you decide to get married where you did?
As I (Maike) am a photographer myself, I loved getting lost in one specific region and fully going into that concept in terms of venue, stationery, outfits, etc. I’m German but grew up abroad, so I kind of wanted to honour my home country but with a twist. Since I always grew up with the Sissi movies, with the actress Romy Schneider dancing in the Bavarian mountains with a dirndl, this became my fairytale of Germany, even though it wasn’t the Germany I grew up knowing.
We then found this beautiful village, Bayrischzell, (thanks to our wedding planner Ronja), which felt as if it had stopped in time and had all of the charm I saw in those movies. We wanted our guests coming from all over the world to have a unique experience they otherwise wouldn’t normally witness.
How many guests did you have?
Tell us about your outfits.
On Friday we wanted to honour the region by dressing in traditional outfits and I found a beautiful handmade, timeless dirndl from Annina. For the big day on Saturday, we wanted outfits that felt playful and true to us, but also elegant.
Hugo went for a dark green suit with a white border outline that gave it a lot of character. I found my dress designer while traveling in Ivory Coast (a place Hugo goes to a lot for work and we have hopes of moving to one day), so it felt like it was meant to be. Super Yaya makes unexpected and fun designs that immediately spoke to me. I chose an ivory-coloured fabric to honour the country it is half from, as the brand is based in Lebanon and Ivory Coast.
The veil was a prop I had from a photoshoot and the shoes had to be Carel. Together with earrings from my grandma, it all felt perfect to us.
What was the most important aspect for you, in terms of planning your wedding?
We wanted it to feel personal and relaxed. My sister and Hugo’s best friend were our Masters of Ceremony and introduced some prank games, a flash mob, and fun elements that gave the day a fun, lighthearted vibe.
Were there any elements that were important for you to incorporate?
Since I work in the wedding industry myself, I loved that my wedding became a collaboration of creatives I know from Amsterdam. Having worked with these colleagues on other weddings before, it was a dream come true to have them help bring my own vision to life—from personalized invitations and menus to flowers and content. Big shoutout to my team of amazing vendors. These creatives are what makes the weekend feel like you’re entering an imaginary world and not just a party.
Any tips for couples getting married?
Stay together on the day, take moments where you step back and look at everyone who is there for you. That’s the only way you’ll stop the time for a bit. Don’t sweat the details, everyone will be okay if something is misspelled or a table seating is wrong. Give your phones to friends and let them take funny videos and photos with them, so you can wake up to that the next morning.
Are there any vendors that you would like to tell us a little more about?
All of them!
Our wedding planner Ronja Baumbach, together with her husband, went above and beyond, taking care of all the logistics that were my nightmare, and helping out at every turn.
Our amazing photographer Corinna Keiser stepped in last minute and did it all on her own. Our stationery girls Rosa and Marit hand-drew all the invites and menus with so much detail and love. Ivy created the flower concept for me all the way from Canada and was there all weekend. The bands laughed and danced along. Sophie Films flew in just for the day to be our videographer and everyone made me feel so comfortable and taken care of. Vendors are everything.
The venue is also so important. Hasenöhrl-Hof felt like family—everyone was so friendly and welcoming.
