Tell us a little about yourselves!
We actually met in secondary school when we were about 17. From day one, we sat next to each other in class because Chris was too late on the first day, so there was no free spot left on the ‘boys’ side’ of the room. Call it destiny. A few months later, our teacher asked us when we’d finally kiss so the teasing could stop, and even our classmates placed bets (in chocolate cake!) on when we’d become a couple. The turning point came when Jule couldn’t attend school after surgery, and Chris first visited her with classmates – and eventually on his own. One movie night (watching Pearl Harbor, of course, lol), Chris kept telling himself, “In five minutes I’ll kiss her”… but he never did. In the end, it was Jule who took the initiative on Chris’s birthday, May 22nd, 13 years ago. (To stay on brand: she also ended up being the one to propose, four years ago.)
Since that kiss, a lot has happened – we moved cities multiple times and ended up living a six-hour drive away from each other: Chris in our hometown, Stuttgart, and Jule in Berlin. As individuals, we’re very different but complement each other well. Chris is more calm, introverted, and steady, while Jule is outgoing, loves change, and is always chasing something new – a magical (and sometimes challenging) mix of him grounding her and her pushing him out of his comfort zone. Over the past year especially, we’ve grown a lot together, found ways through struggles we’d carried for a long time, and learned to compromise and support each other. For us, this wedding feels like the cherry on top of a very long, deep relationship that’s already proven itself. We don’t need to get married to be happy – but it feels like the most natural next step.
Why did you decide to get married where you did?
Well, after being engaged for over four years now, we kept having the conversation about how this wedding should look and especially how it should feel to us. A destination wedding in Italy, a full weekend at a lake house, etc. All these things had been discussed but never felt like something that sparked enough joy to really make us want to do it.
So, five months ago, we were sitting together at breakfast on vacation in Greece, having the same conversation again. Rather ironically, Jule dropped, “Or we just do it while we’re in New York.” (She had a four-week trip to NYC planned with a friend, and Chris was thinking of joining for a week.) Chris looked at her – “Actually…?” – and in that moment, it was decided. (After ChatGPT confirmed it was possible!) We were both super excited. It felt right from the start: just the two of us and a city (with lots of food) we love.
How many guests did you have?
It was just the two of us and our surprise witness – the friend Jule had planned this trip with in the first place, Bella – as well as Bella’s boyfriend (who happened to visit her in NYC the same week) and our photographer.
What was your budget?
Honestly, there was none. As this all came together so spontaneously, it was more about discussing along the way what we wanted to spend on certain things. We’re planning to have a celebration next year with friends and family, so we knew the big budget is still to come. But all in all, we’ve spent approximately 13k€ so far (with the rings being the biggest cost factor), including the flights.
Tell us about your outfits.
Well, we didn’t have too much time to look for outfits, so there was no classic dress or suit shopping involved. Initially, Jule wanted to go for an all-vintage-shopped look and had already secured a vintage Balenciaga skirt – which she ended up not liking when it arrived. From there, we went down a whole online research rabbit hole with lots of ups and downs.
While visiting a friend in Zurich, Jule actually bought an Issey Miyake dress that she absolutely loved. But when she came home, the online orders from SSENSE had arrived and were waiting for her. So she tried them on, and well… there was this dress from the small brand Gia Studios that she had already loved online – and when sending a video to a friend, she commented, I quote, “F@#%, I really like this one too…” Luckily, we already knew there was a second party planned for next year, so the Issey Miyake dress will have its moment then!
(Fun fact about the dress: while DMing with Gia Studios, I found out that the back part of the dress – the one that looks like a veil – is actually the inner lining of the dress. But SSENSE had styled it like that online, and I decided I loved it more that way, too.)
The shoes were a last-minute cop at the local Prada store (recommended by stylist and bestie Morena), and the bag was shipped from a small leather designer in Turkey via Etsy, all just weeks before the wedding.
The story of Chris’s outfit is way shorter. We kind of liked the idea of both wearing light beige/white tones – so he got his perfect pants at Manière De Voir, the classic Dr. Martens loafers about three weeks before the flight. For the shirt he ordered different Jil Sander options and other brands but in the end this shirt from ASOS just had the perfect fit.
What was the most important aspect for you, in terms of planning your wedding?
Hmmm, honestly, I’d say first and foremost, it was about having a fun day with good food and soaking up the best of New York City while just having a great time. And secondly, to have it captured in a natural and fun way, because we knew a lot of people couldn’t be there, so we wanted to have nice pictures to share those memories with our loved ones. And for Jule, definitely also the fit.
Were there any elements that were important for you to incorporate?
I guess our favorite NYC street food spots– food is something that really connects us. We also knew we didn’t want to spend the night in the Airbnb we shared with friends during our trip. Instead, we wanted a special hotel for the night, where we could say our private vows in the evening – a quiet, shared moment to pause and soak it all in, instead of letting the day just fly by with eating, drinking, and taking cute pictures.
Any tips for couples getting married?
We experienced firsthand how easily you can get swept up in the idea of what a wedding is supposed to be– and how strongly that shapes your own expectations for the day, guided by an unspoken script that just seems to exist. It’s not easy to figure out what you truly want and to let go of everything else – but it’s absolutely worth it. That doesn’t mean that any of the “classic” wedding traditions are bad, it’s more about freeing yourself from the pressure of doing things a certain way, and instead choosing the elements that genuinely reflect you as a couple. So I guess the tip would be: Take your time to figure out what you really want from this day for each other & don’t be afraid to get rid of the rest.
Plus: To all the NYC couples: forget the $800 flower bouquets, just make it yourself at the Flower District in NYC for $60!
Are there any vendors that you would like to tell us a little more about?
We absolutely loved working with our photographer Molly Adams that day – she really took the lead and made sure we got all the nice pictures we wanted, so we didn’t have to worry about that and could just enjoy.
We also loved the Liberty Suite in the Standard, High Line: amazing views, iconic interior (a bathtub with a view in the bedroom is always a win!), and great service without it feeling too stiff – loved it! Plus, go to 7th Street Burger and Los Tacos No.1, not just on your wedding day, but any day!
