Tell us a little about yourselves!
We both grew up in LA, Shaan in Malibu and Hailey in Pacific Palisades, neighbouring towns on the coast. However, we did not meet each other until we were both living in San Diego, despite knowing some of the same people growing up. We were introduced by two dear friends who thought we would get along well, and they were right! I (Hailey) remember sitting next to Shaan on a couch in a tapas bar the first night we met, with his arm around me, thinking “I feel like I have known this person my whole life,” and the rest is history!
We now live in Oceanside, California, and are proud dog parents to our two mini dachshunds, Billy & Bobbi Lou. We embody typical Southern California stereotypes: Shaan surfs, Hailey does hot yoga, and both love spending time outside enjoying the California weather. Our ideal evening is cooking a gorgeous homemade dinner with fresh farmers market ingredients for our best friends & eating at our outdoor table.
Why did you decide to get married where you did?
Shaan and I knew we wanted to get married on his parents’ property since the first time we visited years ago. It is a very special and magical place, and we wanted our entire community to have the opportunity to enjoy the tranquillity it offers since we talk about it so often. It was also so special to be married “at home.” Even though neither of us grew up there or live there today, the fact that it is his parents’ home added a relaxed element to the day that we are so thankful for.
How many guests did you have?
140 guests.
Tell us about your outfits.
The Rings: I (Hailey) was never a fan of traditional-looking engagement rings. Unfortunately for Shaan, this meant a custom ring would be required to secure my hand in marriage. Thankfully, Shaan’s grandmother had an affinity for “sparkle,” as my mother-in-law puts it. Using a custom jeweller local to Heber, Utah we designed all 3 rings as a set together using the diamonds from Shaan’s Grandmother’s collection. It is so special to know that every day I wear the same diamonds as his grandmother, and so does he!
Bride: I like to think I was relatively easy-going about most aspects of our wedding planning, except for my dress. Going into this process, I had no idea what style of dress I wanted to wear. I ended up going to 7 different salons between San Diego and LA. I figured out I wanted the style I ended up wearing early on, but there was something flat about the versions I tried on before I found my gown. I was after something timeless with a chic twist, and the detailed draping on the bodice of my gown was EXACTLY what I was looking for. If I had not already known this would be my dress, as I tried it on for the first time in the Newhite showroom, “Love Story” by Taylor Swift randomly started playing, a song I used to sing on repeat as a middle schooler in my room, wondering if I would ever find my Romeo, the magic of that moment confirmed it was my dress.
Similar to the design choices across our wedding, I wanted a few simple elements to do most of the talking. For my look, the dress was the main event, and the rest of my outfit was simple: a pair of earrings, heels for the ceremony, and my red cowboy boots for dancing. I had seen my FARIS earrings in a boutique in Greenpoint Brooklyn, NY, the year before, and knew I would wear them for my wedding. The boots were a Poshmark score years ago and are a staple in my everyday closet, and the heels were a happy accident off the Anthropologie sale rack!
Groom: Getting Shaan to wear something other than boardshorts and a flannel is a monumental task. It was such a treat to see him all cleaned up in his custom-tailored tux! The morning of our wedding, his dad gifted him his grandfather’s cufflinks to wear on our special day. Now, 3 generations of McPartlin men have been married in these cufflinks.
What was the most important aspect for you, in terms of planning your wedding?
The most important aspect of our wedding was curating an experience that was unapologetically us and evoked feelings of warmth, joy, and community in our guests. This translated to three key elements: the setting, the music, and the food.
The Setting: Our venue was deeply personal as it is the home of Shaan’s parents and a place that evokes a deep peace and reverent awe at the beauty of creation. You can’t help but be struck by some form of euphoria when you are standing on the lawn, looking out at a 180-degree view of Mount Timpanogos in the Wasatch Mountain Range with no other man-made structure in sight. The setting was dramatic and impactful; it perfectly evoked the weight of the commitment Shaan & I made to one another in front of our community on our wedding day.
The Music: We are big believers that the soundtrack you subject your guests to plays one of the most important roles in contributing to the vibe of your wedding day. Leading into the ceremony, we curated a playlist of groovy jazz, retro, and instrumental soul. I wanted guests to feel like they were floating into the magic of our sun-kissed venue. We walked back down the aisle to “Jane” by Jefferson Starship, a song that makes you feel like “school’s out for summer!” and a song that opened up our cocktail hour which featured all the rock songs we grew up listening to our Dad’s play in the yard on the weekends. An easy, relaxed, and ready-to-party feeling. When it came time for the dance floor, I had one simple instruction for DJ Jeff: Make it feel like I’m on the dance floor of a middle school dance, and make sure the music pumps. He absolutely nailed it, playing the classic sing-along songs mixed in with dance beats. The dance floor was an absolute party just like we wanted.
The Food: Our wedding would not have felt like ours if the food had not been absolutely fantastic, as good food is a big part of our lives. Instead of opting for traditional wedding food service, we served Tennessee barbecue. Not only was it delicious, but the juxtaposition of our Black-Tie-dressed guests going to town on BBQ was exactly the kind of levity we wanted on our wedding day. There was not a single leftover from our wedding; the food was that good.
Were there any elements that were important for you to incorporate?
1. Both Shaan and I value family history and wanted to ensure we had elements from our family’s past incorporated in our wedding. From Shaan’s side, this was easy. He wore his grandfather’s cufflinks, we had designed all three of our rings, engagement and both wedding bands, using his grandmother’s diamonds, and were married at his parents’ home. For Hailey’s this was a bit more difficult. I thought about using my mom’s wedding earrings and even re-designing part of her wedding gown that I had tried on the Christmas before. Unfortunately, I lost my family home in the Palisades fire and any treasures that could have been passed down for my wedding with it. My aunt was able to share a scrap of my grandmother’s veil, which we tied around my bouquet, and to fill in the rest, I had so many beautiful women from my community contribute to me on my wedding day! My hair and makeup were done by Christa Foley, a family friend who has known me since I was barely two weeks old. My bridal styling, all of my bridesmaids’ dresses, my mother’s stunning beaded gown, and all of the boys’ tuxedos were curated and then embroidered or tailored by the incredible Alli Bradstreet, who has been a part of the Palisades community and our family friend for many years. The touches of nostalgia and time invested by these women in my wedding day meant so much and filled the gap left by the fire.
2. Wine is equally important to my family as food is, and Shaan is a self-classified beer connoisseur. Both our wine and beer selection were important to us on our wedding day. Whenever I am hosting or out to a nice dinner, I always call my dad and ask for his wine recommendation, as he has spent the last 20 years teaching himself everything there is to know about wine. I knew he would love to be involved in planning this part of the event. It was very sweet when my dad proposed the following idea for our wedding day: A Beer Garden for Shaan with the Rolling Taps truck and a Wine Garden for Hailey, complete with a wine tasting for guests. With my dad’s interest and expertise in wine, I allowed him to source the bottles for our event. He went with all wines from Los Olivos, specifically sourcing from Holus Bolus & The Joy Fantastic. Wines created by dear family friends, Amy Christine and Peter Hunken.
3. This detail is the only detail the groom specifically requested. Barrels for cocktail tables. With no context, this is seemingly random and unimportant. Allegedly, one drunk night out in San Diego, Shaan and a few of his groomsmen had “the best night ever” standing around a barrel at a bar drinking beer. Now, barrels seem to be a critical part of their friendship and every wedding day for each of those boys. I don’t pretend to get it, but I am so glad he had his barrels on his special day.
Any tips for couples getting married?
Make sure your day feels like YOU! The more you throw out traditional advice and go with the elements that speak to you, the more your wedding day will stand out as an authentic celebration. Don’t forget what the day is all about, committing your life to your partner & celebrating the heck out of that with the people you love most.
Are there any vendors that you would like to tell us a little more about?
Photography: before I even began planning, I knew this was the most important vendor for me. I wanted to be able to look back on my photos and feel instantly transported back to the emotion of our wedding day. Nikki Strekowski was the absolute best person I could have hired for the job. Not only are we constantly complimented on our photos, but each time I look at them, I am instantly transported back to the exact feeling of our wedding day. Not to mention, Nikki was so fun to hang out with all day!
As mentioned above, having Hair/Makeup, my Stylist, videography and wines done/created by personal friends added such a sweet element to our day.
I would be remiss not to mention how incredible our planner, Shellie Ferrer, was. I knew from the first two minutes of our discovery phone call that she was the right choice. She was the only planner who could instantly provide me with estimates for cost ranges for every required vendor. This attention to detail and straight-shooting mentality translated to a seamless event. I did not have a single thought or worry about any part of my wedding day of. I knew Shellie would handle it all perfectly, and she did!
