Tell us a little about yourselves!

We met 7 years ago while studying in Edinburgh. We both have a background in the arts and we loved styling the wedding ourselves (with the help of Grace’s Maid of Honour, Alice).

Why did you decide to get married where you did?

Rupert grew up in Sussex and we’ve both lived in Brighton, where we loved spending time in the South Downs and Lewes. I remember seeing a wedding at Southover Grange many years ago- the sun, confetti and cobbled streets really stuck with me! We’ve also spent very happy afternoons at Beak Taproom when we lived in Brighton and we thought it would be the perfect place for a relaxed, summer wedding.

How many guests did you have?

120.

What was your budget?

10K.

Tell us about your outfits.

Grace- I knew that I didn’t want a traditional bridal dress, but I knew that I did want big, dramatic sleeves. I’d also always wanted to wear a Shrimps bag! I didn’t want my dress to distract from my beautiful Milli Proust flowers- I loved how my Aje dress felt like a summer dress whilst also being contemporary and fun.

Rupert- I wore a bespoke suit from Casual Fitters in Bloomsbury. I paired this with a classic pair of Dr Martens and a knitted tie from Percival.

What was the most important aspect for you, in terms of planning your wedding?

We wanted our wedding to feel like a relaxed summer party and we thought very carefully about how to make this happen! We wanted a balance of the beautiful landscape of the South Downs and Lewes, with the contemporary element that Beak Taproom provided.

Were there any elements that were important for you to incorporate?

Our good friend Elise read ‘Having a Coke with You’ by Frank O’Hara at our ceremony.

We walked into the ceremony together, which felt really fitting for who we are as a couple.

We wanted Milli Proust’s stunning flowers to really stand out, so we kept the table settings simple and minimal.

Any tips for couples getting married?

Stay true to yourself- take the traditions that work for you and leave the ones that don’t!
