Tell us a little about yourselves!

My name is Brogan Morrice-Scott and I am an artist/designer at Brogan Scott Studio — a creative practice specialising in bespoke illustrations, design and event stationery. My husband Josh Morrice-Scott is a Musician and lead Guitarist in New Zealand band No Cigar. When he's not making music he is working alongside me running our now family business being Operations Manager at BSS.

Why did you decide to get married where you did?

I always wanted an inner city wedding. I love the city of Auckland and it's the city we have always lived in together so what better place to celebrate our love. Old Government House was always a venue I had in mind but unfortunately, they had heritage work planned so we couldn't book them in. Luckily enough a few months down the track of planning I got back in touch with them again to double check and the heritage work was delayed, which meant we could host our ceremony there.

We then also wanted a different location for our reception and I always wanted it to be a restaurant as I love going out for dinner and the intimate feel they create. Josh's one rule was a big room so everyone could feel included, so we settled on Grand Harbour, which is our favourite yumcha restaurant.

How many guests did you have?

We had around 100 guests. Keryn Sweeney captured our day.

What was your budget?

Our budget was $60k NZD for everything.

Tell us about your outfits.

I always knew I'd wear vintage. I share my studio with Lizzie from Love James, who has the most incredible collection of vintage bridalwear so I always knew I was going to work with her and didn't go anywhere else. I showed her dresses I liked and the sort of style I was after, and a month later, she had a few options to show me. The second dress I tried on was the one. I loved the metallic pink look and how it changed colour in certain light, and the textured dupion silk. It didn't quite fit me right and needed to be re-worked so I took it to the incredible Brooke Tyson Ritual, who reworked it and turned the halter racer back dress into a backless holder and created an overskirt in hand-dyed light pink dupion silk. It was the dress of my dreams, a mix of '90s minimalism and Marie Antoinette drama.

Josh's family is Scottish and he was born there, so a kilt was always on the cards. We decided to design our own tartan in our wedding colours, green, red, and pink. I created the design, had the fabric printed, and then Jess from Reparation Studios pleated and constructed it into a proper kilt. He styled it with a vintage white Kenzo shirt he found in London and Doc Marten loafers.

What was the most important aspect for you, in terms of planning your wedding?

We wanted a celebration that felt truly "us" — something relaxed, fun, a little absurd, and full of love. A big party with our favourite people. With two different venues, we leaned into creating two very different vibes. The ceremony and cocktail hour were at Old Government House, a gorgeous heritage building in central Auckland, which gave us that romantic, garden dream. For the reception, we moved to our favourite Chinese restaurant, Grand Harbour. It was playful, bold, and bursting with energy. Our friend Suren, who's also Josh's band No Cigar's sound guy, transformed the space with lighting, perfect for dumplings and dancing the night away.

What I love about Josh is that it was just as much his day as mine. We planned and styled everything together. While we didn't have a planner or stylist, we did work with an on-the-day coordinator, Lisa from With Love Weddings, who was probably our best investment. She allowed us to really soak it all in and feel like guests at our own wedding.

Were there any elements that were important for you to incorporate?

Having really unique moments for our loved ones to experience was important to us, and not taking the day too seriously and just having fun. We surprised our guests with a marching band to play songs while we walked between the two venues, which was such a highlight and something we will never forget, walking through the city at golden hour singing Kiwiana tunes. We also decided to swap more traditional elements for some silly ones, such as cutting a big red ribbon for opening the dance floor instead of a cake, and instead of a first dance, we did strip the willow with guests before we sat down to eat.

Any tips for couples getting married?

Get an on-the-day coordinator so you can be a guest at your own wedding! Also, don't follow trends and style and include elements that truly reflect you as a couple.
