Real Wedding | Fiona & Michael

Tell us a little about yourselves!

We are Fiona and Michael, two Perth-born lovers. Our love blossomed down the aisles of the supermarket where we were both working the night shift as university students. Fast forward eight years on and many milestones and memories later, including our first house, first (fur) baby, and new jobs; who would have thought a checkout chick and a night filler locking eyes down the store aisle would bring us back where we started, but down a prettier and more sophisticated aisle, on our wedding day.

Why did you decide to get married where you did?

We initially planned to elope in Greece or Italy, though we decided we wanted to be surrounded by friends and family so opted for an intimate wedding in our home, Perth. We both love spending time outdoors and being near the water so Matilda Bay made for an ideal setting for our special day.

How many guests did you have?

We opened up our ceremony to extended friends and colleagues, which was followed by a more intimate reception of 65 guests. A smaller guest count is a challenge, though it meant we could spend quality time with our guests whilst also having time for each other!

What was your budget?

Our budget was mid $30k which we managed to stay fairly true to. A smaller budget meant we needed to consider what elements were most important to us for our day.

Tell us about your outfits.

The look we were both aiming for was a modern classic vibe. We wanted something timeless that we knew we’d have no regrets looking back on, whilst also fitting in with our overall aesthetic and styling.

Fiona never really had a vision of a dream wedding dress style, though she had been following Lola Varma for years and always pictured herself wearing one of their timeless gowns. As soon as they released the Dane gown, she knew that was the one! A timeless, silky, silhouette with a subtle Grecian hint. It was perfect! Fiona was very fortunate to have the owner and designer Courtney for all of her fittings and she made the whole experience just divine. Fiona always dreamt of the dramatic veil reveal moment so that was also a must for the overall look. The ensemble was completed with some pointed Cinderella-esque modern glass slippers, pearl earrings gifted from her mother, and her grandma’s ring.

Michael wore a classic black tuxedo with a bow tie, adorned with cufflinks gifted by Fiona of our beloved Australian-shepherd Charlie. Michael’s style is always quite simple and classic so the black tuxedo was true to his style.

What was the most important aspect for you, in terms of planning your wedding?

For us it was really important to create a wedding that was true to us whilst also creating an amazing guest experience for our loved ones. We wanted to create an elegant and stylish setting, filled with love, and laced with a fun and social atmosphere, where our guests could dance the night away with us!

Were there any elements that were important for you to incorporate?

As we weren’t getting married in the Greek church, we decided to add subtle Grecian tradition and elements into our day. We borrowed the Stefana from Michael’s parents' wedding, which Michael’s brother crowned us with during our ceremony. Our beautiful menus and stationery created by the talented Daniela from Creative Line Co also included Grecian notes.

Any tips for couples getting married?

First and foremost, your wedding is your day and an ode to you as a couple. It can be challenging navigating opinions of loved ones when planning, some traditions are special to incorporate but it’s also ok to say no.

Don’t sweat the little things! There are so many elements involved in a wedding which means the possibility of things not quite going to plan, though at the end of the day your vendors always have a back up plan and your guests won’t know if something goes wrong. We had a couple of hurdles ahead of us on our day, though staying calm and trusting our vendors and the universe meant we could still have the best day ever!

Are there any vendors that you would like to tell us a little more about?

We’d love to highlight some of our phenomenal vendors. In saying that, we would also highly recommend all of our vendors!

Ali The Celebrant, we couldn't have imagined our day without her calming energy and beautiful words, which made us feel so at ease in the lead up and on the day.

Jane, our incredibly talented florist from Wildwood Florals. She was always on board with our requests and really brought our floral vision to life. Not to mention how long our florals lasted after our wedding which is truly an ode to her talent.

Alice André , our photographer who captured the aesthetics and essence of our day so beautifully and gifted us with our forever memories. She also made us feel comfortable and calm on the day, effortlessly working her magic around us.
