Real Wedding | Emily + Christian

Tell us a little about yourselves!

We found each other and love and moved to NYC for Christian’s graduate studies at NYU. Emily is an artist with shears and a balayage brush. She is also a Pilates instructor and pianist. Christian volunteers with the New York Harm Reduction Educators in his spare time. We have pushed each other to grow and be our best selves since the moment we met. Our love has truly taken us to new heights.

Why did you decide to get married where you did?

We really loved the idea of an elopement, more specifically, a courthouse wedding. And with us both living in and loving NYC, we wanted to document our journey to and from home: riding the train, walking the busy streets, and the city itself, etc. It was wonderful crossing the paths of so many strangers, all of whom congratulated us and wished us good luck.

How many guests did you have?

The witness to our ceremony was our photographer Sini Choi. We both loved having a day to celebrate our love for each other. We can’t express what it was like having a day to just kiss and smile and goof off and look in each other’s eyes with Sini there to capture it all. No entertaining family and friends, moving from one guest to another, and above all, no stress.

Tell us about your outfits.

We envisioned the beach ceremony of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love but instead of pyjamas, slightly elevated, more classical, and our own–in NYC. Emily wore a gown by For Love and Lemons which was altered by Allen Tailoring and Cleaning. She styled her dress with vintage Miu Miu heels from The Luxury Closet, a pearl drop choker by Vivienne Westwood and Simone Rocha hair clips. Christian wore a custom tuxedo from Suit Supply with Cobbler Union boots.

What was the most important aspect for you, in terms of planning your wedding?

Emily did most of the planning. For her, the most important aspect was finding the right photographer. Second, was curating outfits that expressed our style. And again, putting together a day that was just for us!

Were there any elements that were important for you to incorporate?

For Emily, her two children - our cats, Mishka and Yozhik.

Any tips for couples getting married, particularly during the pandemic?

To each their own. Just embrace it and have fun! If it rains, it rains - just make sure to dance in it!
