Real Wedding | Casey + Sean

Tell us a little about yourselves!

Our shared philosophy on life is community. we wanted to design a day that put our Detroit community at the centre of the celebration.

Why did you decide to get married where you did?

We wanted to show our families what our life together looks like. Our friends’ bar Cøllect, is truly an anchor of the neighborhood, and a gathering place for all people. A place that is consistently in our story.

How many guests did you have?

For the morning ceremony and brunch we invited our extended family – about 50ish people. For dinner we had a very intimate group of friends, who feel like family, about 25.

What was your budget?

We didn’t highlight any particular number. Instead, we centred the idea of a budget around where and with who we spent our money instead of how much we were spending. Our vendors/venues are all near to our heart and part of our community.

Tell us about your outfits.

Casey- I knew I wanted something that wasn’t traditional and something that was comfortable, chic and allowed me to feel like my best self. I chose a ivory Kamperett dress and slip paired with black suede kitten heels Completedworks hoops.

Sean- I wanted something simple, but timeless—something that I could show future grandchildren one day and be proud of. I wanted a traditional cut suit jacket not something skinny and modern, whereas with my shoes I wanted to have a little fun and chose some Dr. Marten loafers. The outfit felt so balanced and I felt so comfortable in it. A major shoutout to Tailored Detroit who made the suit feel like it was made for me.

What was the most important aspect for you, in terms of planning your wedding?

No stress, it should be fun!

Were there any elements that were important for you to incorporate?

Since we began dating, Sean would get me a monthly bouquet of flowers from a local farm and floral designer called Mother of Pearl. It was important to us to incorporate their work because of the monthly ceremony they were a part of in our life.

Any tips for couples getting married?

Remember why you are there and do whatever feels best for your love.

Are there any vendors that you would like to tell us a little more about?

Don’t be afraid to invest in people that align with your values and you want to be around not only on your day, but want to support long-term. The documentary style photography that Justine Montigny brings to the table is something that we knew we wanted before we even knew of her work. From the very first Zoom meeting with Justine we knew we had made the right choice. She was so personable and easy to work that our families thought she was one of our old friends not someone we had never met in person until that morning.
