Why did you decide to get married where you did?
Our original plan was to take our bikes from our home in Atlantic Highlands to Cape May (it’s about 100 miles) and get married at the courthouse down there! Somehow my mom had a suspension of an elopement and threw her hat in the ring of doing a wedding in her backyard. One afternoon she brought over an old scrapbook with newspaper articles cut out describing her grandmother's wedding. It was so descriptive and traditional we loved the image painted in this old paper, that was the inspiration for our wedding.
How many guests did you have?
20 people, but two of them were under 1 year old!
What was your budget?
I wanted to keep it under 20k. Knowing what I know about the wedding industry, I carefully chose what I really wanted to focus on; the photos and the flowers and the food!
Tell us about your outfits.
My dress is from the The Own Studio, based out of London. I had seen them by following some inspiring wedding industry people and they happened to be doing a pop up at the Chelsea Hotel. It was such a lovely experience with Rosie and her amazing designs. I ended up with the first dress I tried on, it just felt so perfect.
My veil was made by Gina at Zatsarina Fashion who also did an incredible job with the fitting of the dress.
Travis opted for this cool green grey suit from suit supply, he got a tie but decided to go without it for a more casual look. He wore Zanzara boots that almost have a western flare which was fun!
What was the most important aspect for you, in terms of planning your wedding?
Because our wedding was so small I was really concerned with the evening having a good flow and it not feeling like a dinner party. That is where the multi-course dinner really played a role in setting the mood for this elevated and romantic evening with free form toasts and speeches.
Were there any elements that were important for you to incorporate?
My parents house is stunning and has the best antiques which I absolutely love. However, I wanted the feel to have a little bit of my style as well. I thought the tablescape was a nice display incorporating the antique sterling and crystal with the clean linen and modern ribbed plates.
As a florist (Linden Co.), the biggest element I wanted to incorporate was flowers! I had decided not to do a ceremony installation because I didn’t want to be working harder than I already was on my wedding day! So I opted to make a kickass flower crown and use myself as the floral piece.
Any tips for couples getting married?
Listen to your gut! It’s important to take opinions as they are given, but if your gut is saying to go for something in particular, you are going to be happy you did in the end. Travis and I both come from very big families so for us to invite everyone would have been a massive wedding, it was a no brainer for us to keep it intimate. We were worried about offending friends and family that we loved but no-one faulted us for one minute for our choice.
Are there any vendors that you would like to tell us a little more about?
I have to give a pretty big shout out to my mom! She isn’t a vendor but her style and experience throwing an amazing event came through in almost every aspect of the wedding. She sketched the oak tree where the ceremony was to be and we used that on the stationary which was just one of so many special details she brought to the weeking.
We had the absolute best team documenting our day! Zach and Elle from Kindred on photography were incredible and bringing in Bram Vandermark for video was such a magical bonus we felt so incredibly lucky to have them all there to tell our story.
