What would you like couples to know about House of Lucie?
I’ve been drawn to art, light and expression for as long I can remember.
As a little girl, I was always out in the garden, paint brush in hand, a blonde fringe tumbling over my face. Growing up and throughout my adolescence, my parents took me with them on their travels and I often found myself studying light, people and connections.
As my sense of self developed, I became inspired by the effortless style in the places I visited and would swoon at the subtle interactions between people I saw. Now, I find myself romanticising reality, simplicity, and intimacy. I’ve learned that beauty exists in honesty, connections are safest when uninterrupted and my couples trust me to tell their story truthfully and beautifully.
I love photographing weddings because the emotions pouring out of them are honest and heartfelt. I adore seeing two people completely wrapped up in a moment and pride myself on capturing the small but significant exchanges that would otherwise go unseen. An eye for detail draws my gaze towards intimate human connection: the way hands fall together, fleeting glances across the room and vulnerability in all forms.
Where are you based?
I am based on the East Coast of NSW in Newcastle, Australia.
Do you travel for weddings?
Yes! Absolutely. Travel has always been a big part of my life, so being able to combing my love for travel with wedding photography is always really refreshing and exciting. I particularly love to travel to Europe for the summer wedding season each year.
How would you describe your style?
Over the past 10 years of being a wedding photographer, I have developed my signature-style to be artfully romantic, editorial and poetically timeless.
What is your most memorable career moment?
I recently celebrated 10 years of being a wedding photographer. In that time I have photographed hundreds of weddings all around Australia and cultural celebrations in overseas destinations. Being a photographer is a core element of my identity and having the opportunity to document connection is an incredibly humbling experience.
What motivates you to do what you do?
I don’t take the opportunity to document connection lightly. Not just the romance between a couple, but family bonds and friendships too. Typically, a wedding day is the chance to spend time with every significant person in your life - it’s a symbol of togetherness, history in the making. I feel really honoured to encapsulate the human existence and tell stories that will be seen and heard by generations to come.
How would you describe your working style?
I am a relaxed, warm and friendly person in nature, so I always bring this with me in my approach to each wedding. Whenever my camera is in my hand, I am constantly observing the way light falls and allowing moments to play out in front of me, photographing stories in a journalistic way. It’s a balance between being unobtrusive, while also providing gentle guidance to ease my couples into frames that feel real, intimate and effortless.
Do you shoot digitally, on film or both?
Both! I shoot digital and 35mm film, and offer this as an add on to all of my couples. Rediscovering film has made me fall in love with photography all over again. I love the simplicity and candid nature of film photography. I particularly love the placement of these truly honest shots, side-by-side with polished digital photography. It allows for a gallery full of timeless images, with a hint of nostalgia dotted throughout.
Do you have custom packages according to individual needs?
Absolutely. Each wedding and couple is unique. My packages can be tailored to suit.
What is a favourite product or service that you offer and why?
I’d have to say film photography. It’s fun, in-the-moment, and imperfectly perfect.
Where would you love to travel to for work?
Paris! The city of love - say no more!
Who is your dream client?
My dream couple is two people that feel at home in one anothers arms. They’re comfortable together and intertwine unapologetically. Their wedding day is a balance of subtle solitude, still moments and gentle embraces - in between the fun and chaos that comes with all their nearest and dearest in one place - laughing over cocktails and iconic dancefloors. They are aesthetically inclined, confident in their personal style and design their wedding day with pride in every intricate detail. In terms of photography, they value the honesty and sincerity reflected in imperfection. They plan with excitement but approach the day without expectation. They trust their team and are focused on connecting with their guests, ensuring their friends and family have an experience just as special as the couple do.
What is your advice to couples getting married?
I think choosing vendors who understand you and your vision is really important. Along with valuing their craft, you need to trust that on your wedding day, they will become an extension of you. My role goes beyond documenting your day, I want to make sure you feel good and don’t have to worry. Trust that you’re in safe hands.
Your wedding day truly does go by in the blink of an eye! Take the opportunity to steal moments alone throughout the day and soak in the atmosphere. Stay present and try to appreciate each moment as it unfolds. It’s a momentous occasion, enjoy the experience.
