Based in New York, Hannah Jan Photo has photographed over 175 weddings for couples seeking to move away from conventional wedding photography. Since 2018, she has been capturing love with an approach that emphasises natural, artful, celebratory, and slightly unexpected imagery. Hannah Jan Photo is drawn to genuine moments, creative composition, and documenting weddings in a manner that authentically reflects the people at the centre of them.
What would you like couples to know about you?
I love spending time with family and friends and being outdoors whenever possible. My husband and I have a two-year-old daughter, so a lot of our life right now revolves around playing, exploring, and doing arts and crafts together. Becoming a parent has made me more sentimental about documenting connection, family, and the quieter in-between moments.
Where are you based?
I recently moved to the suburbs, but my work is based in Brooklyn, NY. I photograph weddings mostly in the tri-state area.
Do you travel for weddings?
Yes! I love being inspired by new locations and scenery. I find it especially refreshing to photograph in spacious environments where the natural landscape becomes part of the story. That said, I’ll never get tired of weddings in NYC. After years of photographing weddings throughout Brooklyn and Manhattan, one of my biggest strengths has become adaptability. I’ve photographed weddings in tiny basement restaurants, warehouses, and all kinds of challenging lighting situations. I’m even used to navigating unexpected scafolding and piles of trash. City weddings keep me on my toes!
How would you describe your working style?
I would describe my working style as comfortable and easygoing. I’m not a huge fan of being in front of the camera myself, so that has deeply informed the way I approach photographing other people. It’s important to me that my couples and their loved ones feel relaxed, present, and able to move naturally throughout the day. Rather than forcing moments, I try to create an atmosphere where people can settle in, connect, and genuinely enjoy themselves.
Do you shoot digitally, on film or both?
I shoot both film and digital, though the majority of my work is digital. Interestingly, many people often mistake my digital work for film. My editing style is heavily inspired by film photography, so I aim for images that feel timeless, natural, and full of texture and depth. I love the emotion that film evokes, and I bring that same sensibility into all of my work, regardless of the format.
Do you have custom packages according to individual needs?
Yes, I understand that weddings are not one size fits all and I’m always happy to work with my clients to create something that feels aligned to their needs.
What is a favourite product or service that you offer and why?
One of my favorites are my preview images. While I take my time carefully editing and curating the full gallery, I send clients a mini gallery of 50–100 images about a week after the wedding. I think there’s something really special about being able to relive the highlights right away while everything still feels fresh and emotional. Those preview images often become anchor memories within the larger gallery and give couples something immediate to hold onto and share with the people they love.
Where would you love to travel to for work?
I would love to photograph a wedding in Sea Ranch, California. The landscape is awe-inspiring!
What is your advice to couples getting married?
I recommend prioritizing experience and comfort, not just for your guests but for you as well! Make sure you can sit, dance, and even run in your outfits. And if not, make sure you have another outfit to change into so you can dance the night away.
