Caleb Gaskins is an intuitive photographer and a gentle observer in his craft. He primarily works in analogue as well as digital formats, and has recently also added Super 8 film to his offerings. Caleb Gaskins documents each wedding day to authentically reflect his couples' true energy and presence. Based in Portland, Oregon, he often travels out of state for weddings.

What would you like couples to know about you?

I’m a gentle observer, intuitive, and deeply drawn to making images that will last - not just with the weddings I photograph, but also in my personal life and non-wedding work. I originally fell in love with photography in college while I was working in the darkroom. The magic of film blew me away and the process from the initial shot to the development and print felt so special. From there, I knew I wanted to pursue a life of studying and making photographs.

Where are you based?

Portland, Oregon.

Do you travel for weddings?

Yes! Most weddings I photograph are out of state.

How would you describe your style?

I always feel I do a disservice to myself and to other photographers when I try and describe the kind of work that is being done (and there is a lot of great work being made in this industry). Especially in today’s wedding world where we use a lot of the same words or approach the day in a similar fashion, but alas, I must try and use words!

I have a deep love for street photography and a love of portraiture. Both approaches inform my style and way of working. I photograph the day based on people’s energy and presence. Sometimes my couples are more quiet and introverted and other times they’re more expressive and outgoing and I want my work to reflect that. My work is filled with quieter moments and subtleties that make my images tender, gentle, unforced and unguarded. There is a sense of nostalgia in my work. My photos also capture the joy and excitement that is already baked into the day. Joy is my favorite emotion to capture and as Mary Oliver described, “it should not be a crumb”!

What inspires you?

I love seeing other people’s worlds. I love getting to peer into how people express themselves through design, architecture, and fashion. I’m inspired by things that are handmade, that feel crafted, intentional, and thoughtful.

Do you shoot digitally, on film or both?

I use both mediums to make photographs, but film is my primary method.

Do you have custom packages according to individual needs?

Yes, all of my pricing is custom and is based on individual needs.

What is a favourite product or service that you offer and why?

I just started incorporating Super 8 into my work. It adds another layer of texture, nostalgia, and fun to the gallery.

Where would you love to travel to for work?

I love going to NYC so that’s always at the top of my list. But I’ve always wanted to go to Paris and Lisbon!

Who is your dream client?

My dream clients love to blend a mix of vintage charm with modern style. They love getting creative and crafting something uniquely their own - from their fashion and wedding design to their guest experience. They want their day to be mostly captured on film. But most of all, they have big hearts, deeply in love with each other and the community around them.

What is your advice to couples getting married?

I probably won’t say anything new here and it might sound obvious, but plan the day you really want to experience. Finding the right venue or location will set the whole mood for the day and then build from there. And when all the decisions have been made and the day finally comes, let go. Trust the

people you’ve hired and be present. Laugh, cry, dance, feel as much as the day as possible. The best galleries are the ones where my couples *almost forget that I’m there.
