Blake Nelson is a New York City-based photographer who is known for his thoughtfulness, curated eye, and unmatched creative vision. He works in analog film and digital mediums to create modern, artistic heirlooms for his clientele. Crafted to feel the warmth of memory and informed by his background in fashion, Blake Nelson’s work is characterised by a discerning sense of empathy and unexpected, impactful perspective.

What would you like couples to know about you?

The purpose I find in this work is not theoretical. It is grounded in lived experiences — sincere love and unexpected loss — that have taught me the value of making and printing photographs. My purpose is derived from what I know to be true. That our grand lives and deep loves are sacred — and there is no price tag that can properly account for the value of their lasting preservation.

Because of this, I view each wedding as a collaboration with my couples and their trust in me is essential. I don’t see myself as a quiet observer but instead experience the day alongside them, so I’m able to capture what it felt like to be in the room... not just what it looked like. Although, you’ll find that in my work, too, because I find sincere appreciation for the beautiful things around me.

Where are you based?

New York City.

Every day I consider myself grateful to move through my life here among so many other artists — both friends and those I do not know yet — because where else in the world can you accidentally celebrate Earth Day with Patti Smith in Elizabeth Street Garden on your way home from an errand at the post office?

Yes... it was, in fact, the greatest Monday of my life.

Do you travel for weddings?

Absolutely! Found traveling often, I have nearly a decade of experience traveling the world to create work for my clients. I find a certain enamorment in the nature of destination events that continually fascinates and pulls me in.

How would you describe your style?

Thoughtful and curated, often informed by my work in fashion and interiors. Undeniably artistic. Clients are often drawn to the unfussy, effortless nature of my style.

I have always felt that my photography effectively toes the line of modern elegance and undone photojournalism. In my wedding albums, you’ll find a fine art atmospheric detail that clearly recalls a wedding memory alongside an image that could be printed and framed as a piece of art.

What inspires you?

An actor disappearing into their performance, in film or onstage. Watching my friend open their first gallery show in Manhattan. Traveling somewhere new, preferably with a beach. Observing a first date across the restaurant and remembering there is always love. Calling my little brother to talk about nothing.

In case you hadn’t guessed, I’m deeply sentimental and these feelings can be found in much of the way I approach a wedding day.

How would you describe your working style?

Creative and thoughtful. Sophisticated but never stuffy. Hard-working. I possess a keen awareness of what is fleeting and what endures.

Much of my approach is characterized by a discerning sense of empathy and candor to strike a balance and create unexpected, artful work for my clientele.

Do you shoot digitally, on film or both?

I work in both analog film and digital mediums, using what I refer to as a “moment first” approach as opposed to “medium first.”

What this means is that instead of first considering the format when I make a photo, I allow my expertise and knowledge of what will best memorialize the moment to guide my instincts.

Do you have custom packages according to individual needs?

Yes, I shoot multi-day events in many different locations around the world — so crafting a custom quote that includes travel is typically a part of my booking process.

Who is your dream client?

People who value the art of self-expression through their own unique sense of style and taste. They rejoice in the way my fashion background is infused in the unplanned, true spontaneity of my work. Most of all, my dream client puts each piece of the puzzle together with intention and values crafting a remarkable experience for the ones they love most.
