Tell us a little about yourselves!

Two pretty boys who met for a weekend in DC during the Fall of ‘21! Eugenio was an active duty service member for the United States Navy (USN), his last duty station was Bethesda MD. While Ewan was in school completing his BSN (Bachelor's of Science in Nursing) at ECU (East Carolina University). Eugenio was making TikTok’s with his spare time and one of his videos came across Ewan’s FYP (For You Page). Eugenio’s uniqueness, nerve, and talent prompted Ewan to shoot his shot via DMs (Direct Messages) on Instagram, with a simple “Hey.” Ewan was willing to make the effort to drive 4 hours to see Eugenio, which carried such an aura! Eugenio could not resist. They were each other's first lovers, Eugenio (23) Ewan (21).

Ewan is from Greensboro, NC, Eugenio is from Lawrence, MA, second-generation immigrant. Eugenio was towards the end of his Active Duty service of 5 years, and was planning to head back home to pursue his current career in Practical Nursing (LPN). Long Distance was maintained for the first year of their relationship. Both were able to have good communication, trust, and commitment, for each other -which lead to Ewan and Eugenio moving in, post BSN completion. After one year of living together they got engaged.

Why did you decide to get married where you did?

Originally we had the intention to save money for a destination wedding, however by that time of wedding-tok, the political climate was too intense to wait. The fear of not being able to get married and experience what many before us fought for was overwhelming. The same country that I proudly served, is able to take away a human right that we’re all entitled to? If that's the case, we’re gonna do what we do best and live in our authentic truth. We therefore decided to have fun with what we had and landed on a whimsy-garden party themed event. No black - we wanted color, more important now than ever to shine the brightest!

We love New York. New York has been a safe haven for us to escape to. Both of us had cultural/

environmental difficulties when it came to our sexual orientation. In New York, we're allowed to express ourselves creatively and find those alike.

How many guests did you have?

30! Given the political climate and account balances reflecting, we wanted to keep it small and intimate, very demure.

What was your budget?

Originally 10K, we were fortunate to have the family cover the reception dinner (which costed 12.7K). Which allowed us to focus on the smaller details i.e. suits and photography. Ewan's overall outfit expenses 4.6K, Eugenio’s overall outfit expense 3.1K. Photographer 3k. DIY flora and cake.

Tell us about your outfits.

Eugenio coordinated the ensemble, I wanted us to have fun with it and take a step out of the traditional norms. Wearing the skirts was essential to the plan. We chose the green and white (ivory) color scheme because Ewans favorite color is green and brown people look good in white. Ewan used reddit to find queer friendly tailors, which is how he discovered The Tailory NYC. I took a different approach and shopped for pieces. I enjoy thrifting so I browsed through Ebay and found the Gucci blazer. It was a gamble getting the skirt from Amazon because there’s a chance for the shades not matching, but the universe was on my side.

Pinterest really helped me put my ideas together, and was able to draw inspiration from GQ Paris fashion week ‘21.

Were there any elements that were important for you to incorporate?

Eugenio; The small details like my nails, I chose to do a snake skin pattern to resemble the year of the snake. Shedding my old self and embracing the journey we call life.

Ewan: The florals were really important for me. The garden party theme was such a good idea and due to lack of funds, we needed to make the bouquets and table flora ourselves. We ended up going to Trader Joes and doing a mass shopping spree for flowers. It was just so fun getting to make bouquets of flowers and add a personal touch to our venue and vibe.

Any tips for couples getting married?

Couples therapy and open communication! Establishing a foundation of open communication before big life changes is important because life can pull you in many different directions. Having that established communication can ground you through high-stress life anomalies. Couples therapy has been a great tool for us because it is non-biased constructive criticism from a third party.

Are there any vendors that you would like to tell us a little more about?

Chellise & Michael were great to work with! Michael was able to capture the essence and the beauty of our day. Also, shout out to Brooklyn City Hall for extending the guest count during the ceremony. We were under the impression that they only allow 3 people in the ceremony but we had a crowd waiting for us and they allowed everyone in. The ,ade the day even more special.
