REAL WEDDING | Polly + Ollie

Tell us a little about yourselves!

We are a country couple living in the cold Snowy Mountains. Oliver works as an electrical engineer, converting cars to electric, in his spare time. Polly is a teacher and a creative, who has a keen drive for gardening and reclaiming second hand items.

We have two kelpies and we love nature, the outdoors and our family and friends.

Why did you decide to get married where you did?

We got married at Scone in the Upper Hunter Valley. We got married on Polly’s grandparents family farm so that her 90 year old grandparents could attend. They are a critical piece of Polly and Ollie’s life.

The farm holds wonderful memories for Polly. She spent most of her childhood skipping pebbles in the Dartbrook Creek, feeding the chickens and weeding the veggie garden with her grandmother.

How many guests did you have?

85.

What was your budget?

The budget - it never feel like enough but we did some serious DIY and bargain hunting. Polly cut costs on the flowers. Polly grew 150 tulips in ode to Oliver’s heritage. We grew them for Oma, Oliver’s grandmother and his late Dutch grandfather, Opa.

We also went down to the flower market in Sydney the day before and did all the florals. We spent about $900 for an endless flower table and bouquets.

Tell us about your outfits.

Polly ordered her Rachel Gilbert dress online with a 40% discount code from The Iconic. Never pay retail, it was less than $1000. The dress looked like silk but it was actually just polyester. (Shhh….I won't tell, if you don’t!) I even fooled my cousin who is a fabric designer for Seafolly. She thought it was silk too!

I ordered my Sachin + Babi after party dress from from the online Anthropologie store. It was less than $300.

What was the most important aspect for you, in terms of planning your wedding?

Our grandparents had to attend, as they are so important to us. Oliver’s grandmother, Oma, travelled all the way up from Melbourne. We were absolutely thrilled that she made the journey because it is about a 12 hour drive.

Any tips for couples getting married?

Cut the cost and the guest list. Make it intimate. Less is more. Set aside plenty of time for people to get to mingle and meet. Make sure to have a lively band so people can dance together. Live music is always a vibe.

Also the details is sometimes wasted on the audience. People just want to chat, drink, dance, eat and be merry. Iit’s more like Christmas dinner - nobody cares what you’re wearing! They only care if the turkey has been cooked to perfection!

The only thing people talked about after the wedding was how nice The Hunted Gourmet food was! (Not the darn 150 homegrown tulips!)

Are there any vendors that you would like to tell us a little more about?

Our photographer, House of Lucie was incredible. We are not flashy people and Khara set such a relaxed vibe. She rocked up on time and with time to spare. She felt like an old friend. She never pressured us into any kitch shots, she has an eye for design and composition and was receptive to our requests to get some random fun photographs!

When we saw the photographs, she made me feel like I was modelling for VOUGE! Something that we may never get to do.

Katalane Tents was amazing with their equipment. They are also the most professional people I have ever worked with in terms of set up. As long as the Sun or moon was in the sky, they were working. Legends.
