Real Wedding | Alex + Martin

Why did you decide to get married  where you did?

Alex grew up behind Laguna Gloria and it has always held a special place in her heart. When her mother passed, she and her 3 sisters spread her ashes in the creek where they would always play that ran between Laguna Gloria and her childhood home. Martin spread his father's ashes in the same creek on their 2nd anniversary, when he proposed to Alex by the creek.

How many guests did you have?

165. LeeAnn Stephan captured our day.

Tell us about your outfits.

My dress was an embossed cotton off shoulder dress with pockets, it reminded me and my sisters of  something our mom would have loved, and  immediately made us all cry when I tried it on- so we  knew it was the one!

Martin’s vest was a surprise to me on our wedding day. The front was embroidered with our wedding day and a few inside jokes, the back was a custom print designed by our friend Ellen VanDusen of Dusen Dusen with images from our lives, our dogs, me playing bass, our parents names, etc. So sweet!!

What was the most important aspect for you, in terms of planning your wedding?

We wanted a heavy focus on fun and food! We kept the ceremony short, sweet and full of laughs, only had 3 speeches, and really wanted to spend most of the night dancing with our friends! Martin was very particular about the food and Contigo Catering did not disappoint! We also really wanted to make it feel personalized to us. We didn’t do a lot of “customary wedding” things  - no bridal party, no cake, no champagne, no first dance. We love Japan and had a sake toast instead, and everyone got custom Sake cups to take home.

Were there any elements that were  important for you to incorporate?

We really wanted to incorporate our creative friends! Seth Rogen was the ring bearer,  Kate Miccuci designed our welcome signs, Ellen Van Dusen of Dusen Dusen created a custom print for the back of Martin’s vest and our gift tote bags, Jordan Katz and Jake Sinclair played us down the aisle, Ricky Mabe was our officiant and my best girlfriend and fellow musician Ryan Fitzgibbon did our florals! We also had custom designed sake cups for our guests made by some of our favorite artists including pet-portrait cups done by Katie Kimmel, and one of a kind cups created by Seth Rogen and Lauren Miller  Rogen, and about 10 other artists we love!

Any tips for couples getting married?

Do what you want! Don’t feel like you need to do wedding norms if they don’t feel like they resonate with you as a couple. Have fun making  it what you want and don’t forget to have fun!!
