Tell us a little about yourselves!
We met in 2013 on Tinder when it was just becoming a thing, before the weird phase. We both swiped right and ended up on a date at a burger joint where I dressed true to my style (outrageous black and white striped pants with yellow daisies, it was a test). We talked for four hours and have been together ever since.
Why did you decide to get married where you did?
Hunter Claire – I did my undergraduate degree at the University of Edinburgh in French and Politics and it’s my favorite city in the world. We wanted a small wedding and Adam suggested a destination wedding in order to get around the big Southern wedding tradition and we ran with it.
How many guests did you have?
56 including us. Friends who have known us over the past ten years of our relationship and family we hold dear to our hearts. We just wanted the perfect dinner party and celebration and at over 13 hours to start to finish we had it.
What was your budget?
We specifically chose a destination wedding to avoid having to pay for a large wedding in Nashville, Tennessee.Â
We chose carefully where to spend and picked a venue that included a wonderful dinner experience and knew that floral and a good photographer were important to setting the scene.
Having our wedding and groom’s dinner at a restaurant were great ways to economise while also guaranteeing a great experience.Â
Tell us about your outfits.
I went to a few boutiques and tried on dresses while scouring options online but I could not figure out what to wear. As a clothes horse it was upsetting.
Adam suggested we take a weekend away and go to New York to try to find something and thanks to one of my members at Soho House Nashville, I heard about Cha Cha Linda Vintage. I loved Eva (the owner) from the get-go and actually almost left with another dress and left New York with nothing but I could not stop thinking about the couture Thierry Mugler lavender suit and knew I had to own it. I felt so fucking powerful in it, I’m so glad I own the suit.Â
I wasn’t planning on an outfit change but fell in love with the Petar Petrov Aleia watercolor dress I luckily picked up at UAL, one of my favorite places to shop in Nashville. And it ended up being the perfect outfit for the deluge in Edinburgh we were expecting.
For our Groom’s dinner the night before, I had my mother’s very 80’s princess Di wedding dress re-imagined by Sarah Jameson of Rudy Lou and she did a perfect job. She also altered my Mugler suit and did a perfect job with both.Â
Adam had to have a bespoke suit made by Eric Bornhop of Eric Adler, a longtime friend and local Nashville-based clothier who walked him through the entire process and delivered a suit completely to his taste that fit perfectly.
What was the most important aspect for you, in terms of planning your wedding?
Hunter Claire – I just wanted a beautiful celebration marking our love for each other with our nearest and dearest and the best dinner party I’ve been to, with good food and good drinks, because hosting is my love language.
Adam – The most important thing was that no one was hungry or thirsty because I have been to too many weddings where you get a glass of wine and a canapé and you drunkenly suffer for the remainder of the night.
Were there any elements that were important for you to incorporate?
Hunter Claire – I wanted to ensure that my Godfather Hunter Royal Kay Jr. was included in the wedding. My little brother Beau read a passage from a first edition of the Scottish Chieftains.
Adam – For the groom’s dinner it was important for me to have good food and music – Lucky Yu hit it out of the park with dinner, and I put together a playlist of music that I liked (The Get Up Kids, Rainer Maria, etc.)
Any tips for couples getting married?
Treat wedding planning like a date, this is what a lovely couple told us and we took to heart. Go to dinner, grab a bottle of wine, make that planning a beautiful thing and do it together so you both have a say in the outcome and your day is a perfect celebration of both of you and your love as a couple.Â
And get a good photographer. We had ours by chance do our belated engagement photos and we fell in love with Charlotte Kinsella and her eye. We were so happy to have her for the wedding.
Are there any vendors that you would like to tell us a little more about?
We had the best celebrant of all time in TJ Thompson who really got to know us and our relationship over Zoom and delivered such an amazing speech that I had friends asking if she would fly to America for their potential future nuptials.Â
Hunter Claire – I have always loved paper invitations and it was so important to me to have something reflect the color and overall feeling of the wedding. Morgan and Graeme of Baby Talk Paper and Risology Club respectively worked with us to create a design that incorporated watercolors from my mother. We ended up with a save the date, invitation, map recommendation, programme and handwritten individual notes to every single guest all hand printed via risograph in Nashville.
Music was really important but we couldn’t find a DJ that really spoke to us so we leaned on two wonderful Nashville DJs BLK CIR for the dinner and drinks and John Stamps for the after party, it was perfect.Â
Our colours weren’t traditional: acid green, lavender, clementine orange and treasure island blue but we aren’t either. Colour led the day and hopefully was felt throughout the wedding.
