Lukas Korynta is a journalist turned photographer, who documents weddings using both analog and digital mediums. He is currently based on the west coast of the US but travels frequently between California and Europe. Lukas Korynta shoots mostly in a documentary style, with some fine art elements and believes wedding photography should be all about finding those authentic moments that make each wedding unique.
Tell us about your business!
I document untraditional destination weddings and work mostly with 35mm and medium format film.
What would you like couples to know about you?
I’m a European who lives in the US, I became a dad last year and being a photographer is my dream job. I used to work for a newspaper before starting my photography business and it still deeply impacts how I like to photograph weddings now.
Where are you based?
I just moved from San Diego, California to Portland, Oregon. I’m originally from Prague and spend a lot of time in Europe every year as well.
Do you travel for weddings?
Absolutely! Most of my weddings are out of state.
How would you describe your style?
Documentary with a touch of fine art. Calm and relaxed, real, creative, playful. I like using both film and digital cameras, try to be invisible most of the time and only step in when there’s a time and place to be creative and direct my couples.
What is your most memorable career moment?
Seeing my photos from a wedding I photographed in the New York Times.
What inspires you?
Old movies, gosh I could go on and on. The films from the 80s and 90s were so beautiful, gritty, full of contrast and interesting composition. I collect behind the scenes books from movie sets, it really fascinates me.
How would you describe your working style?
I am very laid back when I work, I like to observe more often than not and only jump in when it’s helpful or if I have time and space to create. My favorite photos are the ones my couples don’t even know I took.
Do you shoot digitally, on film or both?
Film is where my heart is, digital is good for low light and as a backup.
What is a favourite product or service that you offer and why?
I love printing photos at home, it’s such a grounding experience, seeing the photos come alive. I send each of my couples a little package with large prints, hoping it will get lost on their bookshelf and then discovered again years later.
Where would you love to travel to for work?
Anywhere in Europe, it’s still home for me.
Who is your dream client?
I’ve been dreaming about colorful wedding dresses for years, I really want to capture the most untraditional wedding attire possible.
What is your advice to couples getting married?
Plan a day that sounds fun to you, don’t worry too much about keeping people busy, keep it simple and classy. And take a break at some point to take it all in.
