Based in Collingwood, Black Finch designs fine jewellery with artistry, ethics, and deep intention. Every piece is made from 100% recycled gold, ethically sourced gemstones, and conflict-free diamonds, serving as a symbol of love and identity that endures a lifetime. Black Finch brings joy to people's lives by elevating the earth's rare and natural treasures into incredible art.

Tell us about Black Finch!

Black Finch Jewellery was founded in 2007 by Raymond de Zwart shortly after graduating in Gold and Silversmithing at RMIT. What began as a solo practice in a small Westgarth studio has, over 18 years, grown into a close-knit team of 11 working within our Collingwood flagship gallery and workshop. The name Black Finch holds personal meaning, drawn from Raymond’s Dutch family names, chosen to honour both heritage and individuality.

From the very beginning, our vision has been to create high-end, bespoke jewellery that combines technical mastery with artistic freedom. For us, fine jewellery must carry meaning. It should hold weight in the lives of our clients and become a lasting symbol of love, identity and memory.

We feel both proud and fortunate to have built an extensive collection of rare and unusual gemstones, personally sourced from around the world in collaboration with small, family-run mines that uphold ethical standards. This unique gemstone library allows us to create pieces that are unexpected, deeply personal and unlike anything else.

Black Finch has evolved from a purely custom practice into a brand offering ready-to-ship and made-to-order collections alongside bespoke commissions. With all manufacturing kept onshore and in-house, our Collingwood workshop remains the beating heart of our brand.

Our flagship gallery, affectionately known as the Lilac Palace, reflects our design philosophy: luxurious yet approachable, modern yet timeless. It is a welcoming space where clients feel safe to share their stories, and where jewellery becomes not only art, but heirloom.

What would you like couples to know about your business?

At Black Finch, we create fine jewellery with artistry, ethics, and deep intention. Each piece is crafted from 100% recycled gold, ethically sourced gemstones, and conflict-free diamonds, becoming a symbol of love and identity that lasts a lifetime.

Couples come to us to celebrate their most significant milestones, and we honour that trust by designing with rare cuts, vibrant colour, and a commitment to sustainable practices. Our jewellery is both art and heirloom, made to be cherished daily and passed down through generations.

Our Collingwood showroom and workshop is an inspiring gallery of creative expression where our team blends gemmological expertise with bold, irreverent design. From here, we connect with clients locally and internationally, offering the same thoughtful experience whether in person or online.

Where is your boutique based?

Our flagship Boutique and Workshop is based at 344 Smith Street Collingwood, Melbourne.

Tell us about your newest collection!

The Serpent & The FlowersThis collection is a response to early spiritualists and visionary female artists who explored the mysteries of existence through vibrant colour fields and profound symbolism. Their works, simultaneously futuristic and ancient, speak to the timeless human desire to commune with the unseen. The dreamscapes they created blur the boundaries between waking and dreaming, envisioning worlds where the divine and subconscious intertwine.

“As both jeweller and painter, I am drawn to the relationship between symbolism in abstract art and the talismanic power of jewellery. Both hold intention, carry energy, and serve as vessels for something beyond the material. This collection channels that symbolic power—transforming form into meaning, metal into story, and adornment into connection.” - Davina Adamson, Creative Director

Our designs draw from these themes, rooted in the earth, the stars, and the artist’s soul. Our pieces celebrate asymmetry, unexpected details, and a love of colour, often featuring rare and unusual gemstones that bring individuality to each design. Every creation is informed by an immersion in art, literature and nature, which provide endless sources of meaning, beauty and inspiration.

At the heart of our aesthetic is a commitment to balance, combining classical elements with asymmetry and a playful use of colour. The result is jewellery that is modern yet enduring, expressive yet refined, designed not only to be worn but to be treasured.

It would be like choosing a favourite child, impossible!

Where are your jewellery pieces made?

They are made from 100% recycled precious metals, gold and platinum. We also use ethically sourced natural diamonds abiding by The Kimberley Process, as well as ethically sourced sapphires, tourmalines, opals and requested precious gemstones. All pieces are handmade in our Collingwood workshop.

What is a favourite product or service that you offer and why?

It’s hard to choose a single favourite because every piece we create holds such meaning, but right now we’re especially excited about our new sustainability initiative, the Gold Swap Program. This service invites clients to bring in pre-loved gold and gemstones; worn chains, broken rings, outdated styles or pieces heavy with memory and exchange them for store credit.

These materials are then given new life as the credit can be put towards a fresh custom design, made-to-order favourite or purchase within our gallery. More than recycling, this initiative honours the stories already held within precious metals, aligning with our ethos of meaningful, ethical and enduring jewellery. Did we mention a saving on the daily rising price of gold!? Yes, please!

What inspires you?

Black Finch’s Creative Director, Davina Adamson, draws inspiration from a life deeply immersed in art, culture and nature. For her, creativity is inseparable from the world around her; literature, dreams, strange films, and conversations with her beloved circle of friends all feed into the design process. Living between the vibrant streets of Collingwood and the wild coastal cliffs of Blairgowrie gives her a rich duality of influence: the bustle and diversity of Melbourne’s inner north, and the sanctuary of the sea.

Davina is not trained as a jeweller in the traditional sense, which allows her to approach each collection from a place of curiosity and imagination rather than convention. She begins with big, lofty ideas that are then grounded by the technical brilliance of our workshop team. This interplay between vision and craft results in jewellery that is expressive, original and deeply meaningful.

She finds endless inspiration in the beauty of asymmetry, the peculiarities of nature, and the ever-evolving culture of Collingwood. Every day spent among its street art, food, fashion and community brings new sparks of creativity. It is this openness  to the unexpected, the poetic, the humorous and the sublime that gives Black Finch collections their unique spirit.
