Nikki Strekowski is a wedding photographer in Southern California who specialises in both film and digital photography. She captures weddings with a documentary style focused on storytelling, blending a relaxed editorial and fashion-influenced eye. She is drawn to the in-between moments, quiet interactions, and subtle details that define a day’s atmosphere. Nikki Strekowski's philosophy prioritises presence over perfection; working discreetly, allowing events to unfold naturally while offering gentle guidance toward a relaxed, editorial look.
Tell us about your business!
I work with both film and digital, leaning into texture, tone, and imperfection as part of the story. Film brings a softness and nostalgia that complements the way I shoot.
At its core, my work is about preserving what a wedding felt like, the energy, emotion, and atmosphere, not just how it looked.
What would you like couples to know about you?
I studied design and photography in art school, with a background in art history that continues to inform how I see and approach storytelling.
More than anything, I care about how the day is experienced. I see my role as someone couples can trust, present, supportive, and unobtrusive.
When people feel at ease, the work reflects that. The goal is for them to not just see the day, but remember how it felt.
Where are you based?
Southern California and New York.
Do you travel for weddings?
Yes, wherever my couples need me, I’m there!
How would you describe your style?
Rooted in documentary storytelling, with a relaxed editorial perspective. I’m drawn to real, unguarded moments, approached with attention to light, composition, and movement.
Nothing feels overly posed, but everything is intentional. The work is natural yet considered, honest to the day, with a subtle sense of design.
What is your most memorable career moment?
It’s not about a single moment. It’s about being trusted to document something so personal and capturing memories that become a part of how people remember their lives. There’s something meaningful about being invited into those spaces over and over again, witnessing people at their most open and present. It’s never been one big moment, but the accumulation of many small, honest ones, and those are the experiences that continue to shape my work. and the ones that stay with me the most.
What inspires you?
Connection and light.
I also pull inspiration from music, film, fashion, and art ;anything that carries a sense of nostalgia or evokes a feeling.
How would you describe your working style?
Calm and intuitive. I move with the day rather than directing it, reading the room and responding in real time. I step in when needed to gently guide or support a moment.
The intention is for the experience to feel relaxed and unforced. The best images come from people being fully themselves, not performing or thinking about the camera.
There’s always intention behind the work, but the goal is for it to feel effortless.
Do you shoot digitally, on film or both?
I shoot both, I document the day with 35mm, 120, and digital.
Do you have custom packages according to individual needs?
Yes, I always tailor my packages based on my couples needs and location.
What is a favourite product or service that you offer and why?
Film. There’s a depth and softness to it that’s hard to replicate; the way it holds light, renders color, and captures grain feels both timeless and deeply human. It slows everything down in the best way, and there’s an honesty to it that’s difficult to achieve otherwise. It just feels true.
Where would you love to travel to for work?
Italy, South of France, Spain, Australia.
Who is your dream client?
Couples who trust the process, have a strong sense of personal style, and are drawn to something a little less traditional. They care about atmosphere and detail, but value the experience over the performance of it. Artistic, true to themselves, and madly in love.
What is your advice to couples getting married?
Prioritize how you want the day to feel. It’s rare to have all of your favorite people in one place, and the day moves faster than you expect. The moments that matter most are usually the ones you didn’t plan, the ones that happen in between everything else. Leave space for the day to breathe. Let it unfold. The feeling of it is what stays.
