Jo Photo is a documentary wedding photographer who wields film as her artistic medium. Based in the heart of Canada, with a keen eye for capturing moments as they organically unfold, Jo Photo specialises in transforming vivid colours and heartfelt feelings into tangible memories. Tell us about your business!
I'm Jo Quintanilla, when I was a kid I wanted to be an ‘eyeball’ when I grew up, and now it makes sense. When I was 20yrs old, I started my photography business inspired by the diverse artists and entrepreneurs I met while bartending at a local diner. Their conversations and words of encouragement helped me pull the trigger. My life trajectory changed after I shot my first wedding, 5 years later and I truly believe this is what I’m meant to be doing.
What would you like couples to know about you?
I’m fully trilingual in English, French and Spanish. Which means, I can shoot weddings in any of these languages.
Where are you based?
Calgary, Alberta but I am often travelling to the west and east coast’s of Canada.
Do you travel for weddings?
Yes, most of my summers have been spent travelling far and wide for work.
How would you describe your style?
There’s a charming and romantic humour infused into my work, which I think adds an endearing personality to each image. My style is a blend of documentary storytelling with vibrant colours and an editorial touch, I craft each image to narrate a genuine story with the moments that happen in front of me. I’m a present and intuitive person and I direct with intention when taking portraits, allowing creativity to flourish, naturally. Overall, my style is a reflection of my playful and heartfelt approach to human connection and photography.
What inspires you?
I find inspiration in the vivid hues of 70s-90s cinema, where colours come alive with emotion, that’s why I love to shoot film at weddings. Music tends to awaken my artistry, I'm super into FKA twigs, Rosalía and anything jazzy or experimental. Human connection and the stories that come with it are what form the heartbeat of my inspiration. The diverse expressions across creative mediums fuel my passion for play and exploration and nature serves as a constant reminder of the wonders that inspire my artistic and personal perspectives.
What motivates you to do what you do?
Love because it’s immortal. There’s so much depth between two lovers and that connection ripples into their friends, family and the whole atmosphere. All of those feelings deserve to be remembered and it’s an honour whenever I get to help with that process.
Do you shoot digitally, on film or both?
I shoot 35mm/120mm/polaroid and digital. I shoot solely on film upon request.
Where would you like to travel for work?
Anywhere and everywhere. I love cities. I love nature. But, I’ve fallen in love with Europe and have always been drawn to NYC and LA.
Who is your dream client?
People who are in love, adaptable and passionate. Anyone with a vision that’s a little outside of the box but true to themselves. People with a good heart that appreciate nature, fashion and good music.
